Subjective:
I went to dinner with some friends in Little Rock last night. 9 of us, including me (Jenny was out of town). 9 people on a Friday night is hard to get a table. Especially at Little Rock’s Bonefish Grill. The place is 2 years old now and STILL has standing room only waiting for a table. There was a reason we didn’t get reservations although I don’t quite know why. Mainly, I think, this was a last minute plan. We rode up there guys in one car, ladies in the other. I’m not sure how we got into talking about it, but the guys started talking about grilling and grills. I’m not a “smoker”, I like smoked meats but I grew up grilling stuff. Burgers, steaks, chicken. A few of the guys were talking about their smokers –they had some neat ones it sounded like. Jenny’s dad has a Big Green Egg which smokes meat very well. One of the guys in the car, commented, “man, those are nice.” I realize that. I’d like a Big Green Egg. They use coal as opposed to propane or natural gas. That would be a real adjustment for me. My grill is propane. The grill I grew up with is Natural Gas.

Objective
There was a time that Arkla, now Centerpoint Entergy, would come out to your house and install a grill. No wheels on this thing. It’s permanently affixed to the concrete. No tank, just a direct line to Arkla with all the gas you cared to buy from them. My parents grill is 35+ years old. Daddy did some golf repair work for a executve from Arkla –and although I can’t remember the circumstances, Daddy didn’t want any money from the gentleman for the work– sent out an installer and a new grill to the house. Thirty-something years later, that grill has been rebuilt 4-5 times. New burners, new lava rocks, new grates. However the old girl is getting old. The single base pipe that the grill sits on (by last Spring) had almost rusted out, threatening the stability of the grill. Daddy went next door to my grandparents house and found an old bedside commode. He placed it under the grill, jacked the legs out as far as they would go, and remarkably the grill mounted on top of there like it was made for it. Daddy bought a can of grill pain and painted the BSC to be black like the grill. Looks like it came that way.

Assessment
Until last weekend when we had a family meal at my parents (my folks, my sister’s family, my family), I’d never thought about what that grill means to our family. If there has been a family gathering at my parents house, that particular grill has had something to do with it. Burgers, steaks, chicken, and dogs…I have no idea how much has been grilled on there. Daddy asked me how many burgers, I thought, we’d cooked there. I told him a least a cow. About 5 years ago, Daddy passed me the spatula for family cooking. Leaving me in charge of those meals. Each time I’m out there with that grill, I feel like a little boy playing happily with his Daddy’s prized possession.

Plan
I need to clean up my own grill here at the house. One day I may make the switch to a Big Green Egg. Right now I’m not too worried about it though. I’ve got our Arkla grill at my folks. It’s better.

Jack Tripper helping Janet with back exercises.

Subjective
It’s a Saturday and I’m glad. I got to sleep late. We’d pawned the kids off on the grandparents last night. Yes, I got to sleep late and I made it all the way to 7AM. Daily, I get up at 6 or 6:30, so I made it a little later than normal. Oh well. One of the things that I enjoy immensely is watching meaningless TV. I’ll keep it on Headline News for background noise and maybe catch a little bit of actual news. I also like watching Sanjay Gupta’s Fit Nation. I get to see some interesting things on that. Things that I’ve actually worked into the clinic. Most of those were exercise routines. The mentioned shows were not meaningless though. The type of show I meant though were shows like Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives. Cake Boss. Chuck. 16 And Pregnant. Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew.

Objective
That last one makes me think though. What would be really neat would be if Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew was about celebrities who had and ACL repair or celebrities with back issues. That kind of rehab would rock! Wow! B and C list celebrities going to physical therapy! Just imagine, Joyce Dewitt having shoulder surgery and seeing her have physical therapy on her shoulder! Or Ted McGinnley having traction and joint mobilization to his back! Or Leeza Gibbons having flat feet and then causing knee issues and then her getting orthotics and having to stretch! Man! I’d have my geek-on watching that! Oooh! And maybe here and there a real A-lister: Bruce Willis hurt his back doing his own stunt on Die Hard 5: Die Trying!

Assessment
This is a pipe dream. But an entertaining one at that. However, let me say this. I’m not a fan of the word “Rehab” in reference to “going to physical therapy”. There is a movement within my profession that is actually pushing therapists to quit using that word. I’m not sure it warrants a movement, though. I prefer either “physical therapy” or “therapy”. Rehab, these days, has a bad connotation. Makes me think of Charlie Sheen or Jeff Conway or Lindsay Lohan. Rehab suggests 12-step programs (which have their use) like going to Promises in Southern California or that joint in Hattiesburg that Tiger is getting cured at. That reminds me of Cousin Eddie talking about his daughter being in rehab getting “cured off the wild turkey” during Christmas Vacation.

Plan
I’d gladly help Dr. Drew start a new celebrity medical show. Getting the word out about physical therapy via use of has-been celebrities or even current ones. Theme episodes showing a condition with a different celebrity each week would be a ratings hit for TLC or VH1. Stay tuned for Celebrity Physical Therapy! This week’s episode “Sinbad’s Sciatica!” and next week “Vern Troyer’s Vertigo”. Later in the season stay tuned for “Ed Asner’s Neuropathy” and “Sherman Hemsley’s Herniated Discs”. I could go all day.
